RESTORATION of Antique 12-gun DIEPPE SHIP MODEL by Alexander Scherbak

These notes are not just about restoration of this particular model, but also, unprecedented opportunity to discover, understand and describe many aspects of how Dieppe ivory ship models were initially made.
There is no such record known to the public to this day...

The visual appearance of this model can be traced back to 1980. Next time it was for sale in 2012.

Step 1: Bowsprit
Whole assembly of the bowsprit including stays and sails. was removed from the model and deassembled after taking pictures. Bowsprit was warped.
7 mm tip of jib boom was broken so I decided to make whole part new from antique elephant ivory scrape pieces ( mostly piano keys) I obtained long ago.
I managed to straighten original bowsprit, but bent sprit sail yard broke after several attempts to make it straight. So I made new one.
I noted that bowsprit was not glued to the deck infront of the mast, but just inserted into the hole in bulwark and seems like holding in place only by assembly and rigging. The same with bowsprit cup and the part representing for-stay color, - both were free to move after cutting and cleanning surronding tread. Sprit sail yard was attached to the bowsprit with rough accumulation of thread and glue (old restoration) which must be cut, removed and cleaned
